Beat the Summer Blues with Backyard Games

JULY is an amazing month in many ways.  School’s out (enough said).  The Fourth of July and all the glorious Independence Day celebrations start up.  Summer’s in full bloom.  Baseball season is at its peak – Homerun Derby…oh yeah!  But, it’s also a month of mixed emotions just the same.  Mosquito bites.  The Summer heat and humidity.  Kids saying they’re bored.  Parents constantly looking at their calendars to when school starts again.  Vacations to the beach or theme parks have come and gone.  More mosquito bites.

Don’t despair or cue the sad violin music just yet.  Let’s find a way to kick those Summer blues in the you-know-where and spice up the next few months with some BACKYARD GAMES!  Even a front yard will do.  As long as you have some outdoor space to stretch, spin, and sprint you’ve got room to set up some classic and not so classic games.  Once you’ve got the space, all it takes is a little creativity and energy to get going.

1. To start off, you may need to do some digging around in the basement, garage, or under the kitchen sink for some props.  Hey, that could be your first game!  Have the kids go on a scavenger hunt around the house for items like markers, string, empty bottles, chalk, balloons, etc.

2. Next, gather all the finds together and let those creative juices flow to see what games can be made.

If you’re looking for some ideas, check out BRIT + CO’S list of 50 Outdoor Games to DIY this Summer.  Easy and inexpensive, their party ideas are sure to be a hit! Monster Bean Bag Toss, Lawn Scrabble, Rock Dominoes, Ice Block Treasure Hunt, The Human Bubble… The list goes on and on and you’ll definitely want to try at least one every day till School starts up again!  Another great site to inspire your backyard game extravaganza this Summer is MOM.ME’S Backyard Games for the Whole Family.  You’ll get the scoop on what equipment and gear you’ll need to set up classic games like Badminton and Bocce Ball.  You may be surprised at how much your family and friends will get into croquet!  No, not the Alice in Wonderland version.

We even have an idea up our sleeve for outdoor backyard games.  Love a good ol’ water balloon fight? Our OgoDisk H2O was designed specifically for play with water balloons. The light weight disk can also double down as the ultimate pool or beach toy with its ability to float in the water.  The set is perfect for kiddos ages 5 and up and includes a pack of 50 water balloons.

3. All that’s left to do is to scope out your backyard and set up the equipment.  Invite some friends and neighbors over to watch or participate and LET THE BACKYARD GAMES BEGIN!
